The American Cancer Society works to save lives and create a world with less cancer. Together with millions of supporters, the society is a nationwide, community-based volunteer health organization dedicated to eliminating cancer as a major health problem. With headquarters in Atlanta, the American Cancer Society has regional and local offices through the country, including a significant presence in Houston.
The American Heart Association is a voluntary health agency that works to foster appropriate cardiac care in an effort to reduce disability and death caused by stroke and cardiovascular disease, the nation’s number one killer. Founded by six cardiologists in 1924, the AHA today funds innovative research, fights for stronger public health policies, and provides critical tools and information to save and improve lives.
Barrio Dogs is a Houston-based, nonprofit animal welfare organization that focuses on community education as the most effective tool to end the city’s problem of stray and abused animals, estimated to be as high as 1.2 million. The organization’s programs raise awareness in low-income communities about proper animal care, encouraging pet owners to spay or neuter their pets and providing proper education as well as affordable and accessible veterinary services.
Canine Companions for Independence enhances the lives of people with disabilities by providing highly trained assistance dogs and ongoing support to ensure quality partnerships. The largest nonprofit provider of assistance dogs, Canine Companions, is recognized worldwide for the excellence of its dogs and the quality and longevity of the matches it makes between dogs and people.
Dress for Success Houston empowers women to achieve economic independence by providing a network of support, professional attire and development tools to help women thrive in work and life. Since 1998 the organization has provided business attire, career and job retention advice, and a much-needed boost in confidence to more than 35,000 women in the Houston community, showing us all that one woman, one suit, and one job can change the world.
Goodwill strives to enhance the dignity and quality of life of individuals and families by helping people reach their full potential through education, skills training and the power or work. Goodwill seeks to accomplish its mission by strengthening communities, eliminating barriers to opportunity, and helping people in need reach their full potential through learning and the power of work.
Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD) seeks to end drunk driving, help fight drugged driving, support the victims of these violent crimes and prevent underage drinking. Since 1980 when the organization was founded by a mother who lost her daughter to drunk driving, the number of drunk driving deaths has been cut in half; still, every day in America 27 people die as a result of drunk driving crashes.
The Nick Finnegan Counseling Center provides personalized service and excellence in counseling at affordable rates for everyone regardless of finances or age. The center helps people of all beliefs address emotional stress by connecting them with professional counseling, support groups, and referrals.
Special Olympics provides year-round sports training and athletic competition in a variety of Olympic-type sports for children and adults with intellectual disabilities. They give them continuing opportunities to develop physical fitness, demonstrate courage, experience joy and participate in a sharing of gifts, skills, and friendship with their families, other Special Olympics athletes, and the community.
Unlimited Visions provides a highly effective treatment program in an outpatient and residential environment that meets the spiritual and physical needs of chemically dependent adults and adolescents on their journey of recovery. Services include comprehensive substance abuse treatment for adult men and women, substance abuse prevention, and intervention and treatment for children, adolescents, and adults.
