Are Accidents Occurring More Frequently in Houston?

Auto Accident LiabilityHow often are automobile accidents occurring in Houston, and is the accident rate on the rise?

Soon, the Houston-Galveston Area Council (H-GAC) will release its annual mobility report, a yearly report card that tracks progress toward our area’s stated transportation goals. As we await the data for 2017, let’s take a look back on last year’s mobility report.

According to the 2016 Mobility Report, both the vehicle crash rate and the overall number of vehicle crashes went up from the previous year. While the report did contain some good news, such as a substantial increase in public transit ridership and improved pavement and bridge condition, the bad news relating to safety showed a need for greater focus on this area. Car accidents, bicycle crashes, pedestrian accidents, accident-related fatalities, serious injuries and costs related to crashes all increased from 2015.

This trend mirrors that of the nation at the time. Crash-related deaths have been on the rise across the United States in recent years, especially among pedestrians and bicyclists. This could be due to a push for more people to embrace alternate forms of transportation such as walking and cycling.
